A green roof overhead: good for you, your home, and nature.
The term “green roof” is quite fitting: it is a roof designed to accommodate vegetation. This can range from grasses and succulents to shrubs and even trees. One specific type of green roof is the so-called extensive green roof, or sedum roof. An extensive green roof consists of a substrate layer in which plants grow, with a drainage layer beneath. This type of roof is lighter and more cost-effective compared to an intensive roof. An intensive roof, often referred to as a roof garden, has a deeper planting layer and places much more load on your roof.
Green roofs help reduce the ecological footprint of buildings. Using lightweight and sustainable systems, such as ECCOsedum panels, minimizes the need for major structural modifications. As a result, the panels can be installed on almost any existing roof. Additionally, they are made from recycled materials, helping to reduce the environmental impact of the construction industry.

How to Install and Maintain a Green Roof?
Installing a green roof is much easier than one might think, especially with a system like ECCOsedum. These mats come pre-grown and can be quickly and easily installed (and removed), even on sloped roofs. Thanks to their low weight (only 84 kg per square meter when saturated), green roof mats can be installed on almost any existing roof without major structural modifications. Additionally, the mats can be installed year-round.
Maintenance is minimal, as sedum plants require little care and tolerate dry conditions. A sedum roof only needs to be trimmed once a year, preferably in September. This removes weeds and withered plants. With ECCOsedum, weed growth is further limited by the consistent substrate thickness. If it is dry and hot for an extended period, it is advisable to water the roof lightly. Other than that, you don’t need to worry about your green roof. This means that a green roof is not only a sustainable choice but also a low-maintenance investment for the future.
